Our 2014-15 English Class
Term one:
Our writing focus this term is on Narratives. There are two parts that will be assessed.
1. A creative innovation on a Narrative. This may include a change in the setting, complication, resolution, or in the characters themselves. We are looking for an innovation on a Narrative, that is highly engaging and uses the appropriate language structures and features. Due: Week 10, Wednesday 4th November.
2. A Character Reflection Presentation. The children will complete the novel study booklet before choosing a character to reflect upon and then present to their classmates. We are looking for relevant language to meticulously convey their point of view about the novel, along with extensive supporting detail to explain and extend their reasoning. The presentation should be an insightful reflection on the viewpoints and actions of the chosen character. Due: Week 11, Thursday 12th November. Criteria Sheets are at the bottom of this page.
Term Two:
Our writing focus this term is on Poetry as well as Explanations.
This term, we will be focusing upon Poetry and Explanation writing.
The three main forms of Poetry we will focus upon will be Quatrain, Limerick and Ballads.
Kids will listen to, read and view a range of poetry including narrative poems. They will complete a graphic organiser demonstrating their interpretation, and use this to create a transformation of the poem to a digital narrative.
Below are two very useful links showing kids' explanation exemplars.
Explanation via a New Zealand website.
Explanation via Writing is fun.
Term Three:
Our writing focus this term is on Persuasive text as well as revising Narratives. The final weeks will give the kids a chance to write a film review
When developing persuasive writing, students will:- Persuade a reader to the writer's point of view ... through the presentation of relevant points with supporting evidence.
- Revise and edit for sense, meaning, and effect.
The principle question that the teachers will ask when assessing our kids' writing in any of these genres that we cover this year is:
What impact does this piece of writing have on a reader?

Another super Genre website the kids can access is by clicking on this link: Writing is fun.
Here is a Kiwi website that shows different examples of kids' writing across all levels from grade 1 and up. It is always good to look at other kids examples to get ideas of what makes a story good, along with seeing the things they could improve upon.
Click on the links to show the examples: They are levelled from 1 - 5. One being a simple story and five being at the higher end of the scale with more detail. The second link is another great website to help kids with their structure when writing, along with some more examples.

Homework for Mr Blair's English class - which can be done in class time, otherwise this becomes homework.
Focus for weeks 1-2:
Main focus this week is to review our Term One writing topic: Narratives. Please look at how Narrative are structured and what makes a good Narrative. Remember to show and not tell, use the five senses...etc
You have two Spellodrome tasks to complete. We will complete one of them in class as our Naplan practise examples.
Please also look towards Term Three's topic: Persuasions.
Copy from Writing is fun, the boxes demonstrating what is required when writing Persuasive text. Attempt to write some your self using the correct structure.
Spelling City assignments completed by Thursday 8:00am. Spelling tests are Thursdays.
Spellodrome tasks to be completed by Thursday 8:00am. ( You have two tasks this week.)
When proof reading and editing, you must ask yourself the following (whilst reading aloud):
1. Have I checked for possible mistakes?
2. Have I checked for punctuation and capital letters?
3. Does my writing make sense? Are there any missing words?
4. Is there a better way to write it? Could I use more descriptive words? Did I include figurative language or use
some of the 5 senses? Did I show, not tell?
5. Could I combine two or three sentences into a more interesting sentence? Have I varied sentence beginnings? Have I used paragraphs?
6. Did I challenge myself and take some risks to improve my writing style, or did I just play it safe?
